In the transition of Western thought from foundationalism to modernity, the status of the human subject underwent a profound shift, and meaning in language moved away from stability and fixity. As the subject's ability to determine and receive a single, predetermined meaning diminished, language became a domain in which interpretation and hermeneutic engagement gained central importance. The aim of this study is to examine the fate of meaning in modern language and to clarify how meaning in modern poetry becomes dependent on use, context, and linguistic practice. Employing a comparative linguistic method, the research draws on Ludwig Wittgensteinʾs theory of “language games” to analyze two modernist poem- Nima Yushijʾs Phoenix and Velimir Khlebnikovʾs Incantation by Laughter. Finding indicate that Nima destabilizes fixed meaning by breaking classical poetic structures and creating new patterns of lexical adjacency, thereby transforming meaning into an interpretive process. Khlebnikov, through extensive morphological and phonetic word-creation, disrupts conventional sign- referent relations and situates meaning within the poetic function of the word. Despite cultural differences, both poets respond to the modern crisis of meaning by turning language into a field of play, experimentation, and semantic fluidity/ the study concludes that semantic instability is a shared foundation of modern poetry in Iran and Russia, and that interpretation functions as the primary mechanism for meaning making in modern poetic discourse.
