This study, employing a semantic and color research approach, investigates the classification of fixed adjective–noun combinations associated with melancholy-related emotions in the Russian linguistic context. The study focuses on two nouns denoting such emotions — грусть (“sadness, sorrow”) and печаль (“grief, melancholy”). The research examines the grammatical category of the adjective in collocation with the noun and develops a semantic classification of these combinations based on their conveyed emotional–affective load.
This classification takes into account a range of parameters, including symbolism and psycholinguistic factors. Among the influential factors are those related to temperature (warm, burning, cold, etc.), taste (spicy, bitter, sweet), and colors (white, black, gray, purple, sky blue, blue, brown, etc.), as well as nature-derived colors such as пепельный (“ashen,” derived from the ashes of someone/something), together with their light and dark shades.
The aim of the research is to understand how Russian speakers’ culture and worldview are reflected in the expression of emotional and affective concepts, and how they contribute to the formation of metaphors and idioms relating to sadness, sorrow, and grief in adjective–noun combinations. The findings may prove useful for various groups, including linguists, Russian–Persian translators, psycholinguists, Russian language educators, and Iranian learners of Russian in the fields of translation and language teaching. A separate section of the study addresses the pedagogical and translational applications of the results, with the goal of facilitating their practical use in language learning and translation contexts.
