Abstract
The choice of educational textbook, as both the teacher's and students' reference materials is indeed of special importance for scholars of language teaching. Moreover, Howard H. Gardner's Multiple Intelligences theory puts under scrutiny the differences and diversity of learners’ intelligences, including those of language learners. Integrating these two fields, provision and design of foreign language learning references, may thus provide comprehensive, meticulous teaching procedures through sorting, arranging, and prioritizing the learners' intelligences in accordance with the pedagogical targets and needs.
The world's best selling Italian reference book series “Nuovo Espresso”, has been the main coursebook in Pietro Della Valle Italian School in Tehran, Iran, for a decade. The current essay shall initially analyze the first volume of the book series structurally and content - wise; then it will move on to assess it through the lens of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, considering frequency and quantitative assessment of the concept presented in the text of “Nuovo Espresso 1”. Next, the effectiveness and appropriateness of this book for the Iranian learners will be indicated.
The current essay is hoped to assist instructors and policy – makers involved in Italian language education in Iran in design, plans, and scholarly management of the Italian language teaching system.
