A Sociological Approach to the Manifestation of Gender in the Persian Translations of the Arabic Novel 'Al-Aswad Yaliq Bik'

Abstract

The existence of women’s language has long been a focus of attention for linguists and sociologists, leading to several studies in this area. In this context, the present qualitative and descriptive-analytical study aims to investigate the manifestation of the translator's gender in the translation of the Arabic novel "Al-Aswad Yaliq Bik" by Ahlam Mostaghanemi. In doing so, the existing translations of the novel by a female translator, Maryam Akbari (2018), and a male translator, Mohammad Hamadi (2022), were selected, and the linguistic features of women’s language in these translations were extracted. Ultimately, the samples were analyzed based on Lakoff's features enumerated for women’s language comprising the five categories of the vocabulary related to women's domains, the use of emphasis, articulation of details, polite discourse, and feminine vocabulary and expressions. The results showed that not all features attributed to feminine language were evident in the speech of the female translator; among these, the aspects of polite discourse and feminine expressions were more salient in the language of the male translator. The use of emotional tone was another characteristic attributed to female language that was found in the words of the male translator. Therefore, the features attributed to women’s language are neither universal nor general. The findings were examined from a sociological perspective, considering the concept of social roles and focusing on gender as an element influenced by social and cultural factors. Additionally, the results were interpreted through the lens of social constructivism, viewing gender as a social construct.
